Measuring capital in active addiction and recovery: the development of the strengths and barriers recovery scale (SABRS)
David Best, Wouter Vanderplasschen and Mulka Nisic
This article captures multiple levels of recovery from the aspect of even ‘recovery’ being a contested term. The authors breakdown strength items in the recovery process, i.e., exercising, nutrition, maintaining a bank account, etc., to barriers, i.e., having untreated emotional or mental health problems, limited access to health services, having a criminal offense record, etc.
The authors also break down strengths and barriers by gender and how the pathway to recovery may not require the elimination of all barriers, or the possession of all strengths. This paper is a significant enhancement to the existing body of Life in Recovery research in the offering of a mechanism for quantifying key aspects of positive and negative recovery capital (strengths and barriers) to create a scalable measure that can assess current situations and change.
